Werewolf sightings of Wisconsin

Here is something intresting I have stumbled across. A record of alleged werewolf sigtings within Wisconsin.

One of the first Wisconsin werewolf sightings occurred in 1936. A man named Mark Schackelman reportedly encountering a talking wolfman just east of Jefferson, Wisconsin on Highway 18. As he was driving along the road one evening, he spotted a figure digging in an old Indian mound. He looked closer and saw that the figure was a strange, hair-covered creature that stood erect and stood more than six feet tall. The face of the creature boasted a muzzle and features of both an ape and a dog. Its hands were oddly formed with a twisted thumb and three fully formed fingers. The beast gave off a putrid smell that was like “decaying meat”.

Schackelman returned to the site the following evening, hoping for another look, and this time, he actually heard the creature speak in what he described as being “neo human”. The beats uttered a “three-syllable growling noise that sounded like gadara with the emphasis on the second syllable.” Schackelman was a religious man and after spotting this obviously “evil” creature, he began to back away from it and to pray. Eventually the creature was lost to sight.

But did it turn up again? In 1964, another man, Dennis Fewless, had a similar sighting less than two miles away. Fewless was driving home around midnight from his job at the Admiral Television Corp. in Harvard, Illinois. After turning onto Highway 89 from Highway 14, his headlights caught an animal running across the road in front of him. It was dark brown in color and he estimated that it weighed between 400 and 500 pounds. He also described it as being seven or eight feet tall. It ran across the highway, jumped a barbed wire fence and vanished. Fewless returned to the spot (in the daylight) hours to look for footprints or other evidence but the hard, sun-dried ground offered nothing. They did find where the corn had been pushed aside as the beast entered the field though. “I was awful scared that night,” Fewless told author Jay Rath. “That was no man. It was all hairy from head to feet.”

In 1972, a werewolf returned to Wisconsin. One night, a woman in rural Jefferson County called the police to report an attempted break in at her home. According to an investigation conducted by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, she said that the intruder was a “large, unknown animal” that had come to the house and had tried to get in the door. The creature departed but returned again a few weeks later and injured one of her farm animals. The account stated that the creature had long, dark hair, stood about eight feet tall and walked upright like a man. Its arms were long and it had claws on each hand. After trying to enter the house, the beast went out to the barn and attacked a horse that was stabled there. It left behind a deep gash on the animal that stretched from one shoulder to the other. A footprint left behind was more than a foot long. Bigfoot investigators dismissed the report, saying that a Sasquatch would never be that aggressive. But what about a werewolf?

Perhaps the most celebrated and strange werewolf reports of recent years again come from Wisconsin and involve what has been dubbed the “Bray Road Beast”. The first public sighting of the monster occurred on October 31, 1999 when 18 year old Doristine Gipson of Elkhorn was driving along Bray Road near Delavan. As she neared the intersection of Hospital Road, she felt her right front tire jump off the ground as if she had hit something. She stopped the car and peered into the darkness to see a dark, hairy form racing toward her. She jumped back into the car and was attempting to drive away when the beast jumped onto her trunk. Luckily, it was too wet for the creature to hang on and it fell off onto the pavement. Doristine returned to the site later on that evening with a young girl that she was taking out trick-or-treating and saw a large form on the side of the road.

She told about her encounter the next day and as word spread, more local people began to step forward with their own encounters with the beast, dating back to 1989. One night in the fall of that year, Lorianne Endrizzi was rounding a curve on Bray Road (just a half mile from the site of the later incident) and saw what she thought was a person hunched over on the side of the road. When she slowed down, she took a closer look at the figure on the passenger side of the car. She was no more than six feet away from it at the time. The sighting lasted for about 45 seconds and she stated that she clearly saw a beast with grayish, brown hair, fangs and pointed ears. “His face was … long and snouty, like a wolf”. The creature also had glowing yellow eyes. She reported that she had no idea what this thing could have been until she saw a book at the library that had an illustration of a werewolf in it.

Around the same time period, a dairy farmer from Elkhorn (near Delavan) named Scott Bray reported seeing a “strange looking dog” in his pasture near Bray Road. He said that the beast was larger and taller than a German Shepherd and had pointed ears, a hair tail and long gray and black hair. He added that it was built very heavy in the front, as if it had a strong chest. He followed the “dog” to a large pile of rocks but the creature had vanished. He did find that it had left behind huge footprints though, which disappeared into the grass of the pasture.

The sightings continued and added up to a number of bizarre encounters between 1989 and 1992. The creature resembled no known animals, but alternately was compared to dogs, bears and wolves. According to Jerome Clark, Dan Groebner of the International Wolf Research Center in Ely, Minnesota stated that the creature could not be a wild wolf. To further complicate matters, all sorts of other sightings in the region also began to pour in, including Bigfoot-like creatures, animal mutilations and men in black. As seems to be the chaos during most Fortean flaps, all matter of high strangeness began to filter into the area.

I found this to be very intresting, and wondered what could account for the surge of werewolf sigtings that occured within this state. Though such reported sigtings that had occured have now petered out those that were reproted were not that long ago relitively speaking. I did have one theroy that I did some looking into, as I know there had been at one time Native American Tribes in that area, so I thought of the skin-walker, which I have refercened before here but as an overview, they are Witches with the ablity to shift-shape, and though they can take the form of any animal they commonly appear as wolves, and often it is said that a skinwalker will where the skin of the animal they shift into. Though they seem to be most strongly connected with the Navjo whom did not reside in Wisconsin, other tribes did have simillar legends.

  1. Werewolves in Wisconsin? It almost sounds comical, but I guess why not? The legends seem to make them more common in Europe, but I suppose there really isn’t any reason why they couldn’t migrate, much like people did.

One interesting thing I noticed was that the vast majority of the stories seem to occur near a road or from a car. I kinda thought was odd. It would seem counter to werewolf nature to operate in places where they would be readily seen by the public.

The farm/stable story was the exception, which in fact seemed to make more sense, behaviorally, than the others. But it could just be a coincidence of opportunity. Who knows…

  2. Yes that is true, which is why I thought of the skin-walkers, which are not true werewolves, but to one whom does not know any better could appear very much like a werewolf.

  3. We are finishing up on a book titled
WEREWOLVES; FACT, FICTION AND IN LUST
with an introduction by Brad Steiger, as well as all sort of movie stills, posters, reprints of a rare manuscript from l885 and new material by one of our researchers Sean Casteel. Anyone who would like to contribute can reach us at

  4. Ditto to Tim. They did a Monsterquest on it…. kinda creepy. I think it was titled wolfman or something…. anyway, you can buy it on itunes or see it on the history channel website. its kinda crazy, but i love it anyway. :) Love your site!

  5. Wisconsin DOG MAN.
The Night Our Heart Stood Still
My girl friend and I went out to feed deer for the hunting opener on Nov. 22, 2008, we where in the Chequamegon National Forest in northern Wisconsin. It was November 21, 2008 and the time was 12:10 AM, it was totally dark out and light snow was falling with an accumulation of about 1 inch covering the roads. The Temperature was 11*F and the wind was blowing from the north west with a wind chill of 0*F. We made a U turn to the left onto an unfinished ATV trail in our F-150 4X4 Pickup heading towards last years feed pile. I got to the bottom of the hill and backed in and parked. I got out my pistol and loaded it, I then put it in my holster, I grabbed my headlight with 3 LED bulbs and secured it on my head, I handed her a shaker LED flashlight and proceeded to the back of my truck where I had a 5 gallon bucket with corn and apples in it, I walked around to her side of the truck as she was putting mittens on. We both started to walk together, her just behind and to my right side when we both noticed a fresh set of tracks in the snow heading down wind of us in the same direction we where walking. At first it was not the size that caught my attention, it was “WHAT ON GOD”S EARTH MADE THESE TRACKS” immediately my skin crawled as I looked around with my head to see if what we just had come up on was in sight. I was staring in disbelief at what I was witnessing. I was in a slight stage of shock as I looked at her she looked at me and we both looked down at 4 well formed foot prints of some kind of scary tracks that either of us had ever seen before. What ever I witnessed the foot prints of has 2 pointed talons on the end of it’s foot that are isometrically the same with a rectangle shaped heel. The talons joined on the outside and at the same length in between the talons on each foot. They are 15.5 inches long and 5.5 inches wide with 64 inch strides. I have a 36 inch stride at 5′10″ tall to give an idea of the size of this creature. I believe we just missed seeing what caused these tracks and what ever made the tracks was still in the area and possibly watching us. My girl told me to load my pistol and keep it out, I did not argue. At first she wanted to leave right away but the sheer adrenaline and interest of what caused the tracks kept us there. I said “ok let’s get out of here” but again interest kept us there looking at the tracks. My fear slightly subsided enough to think about the upcoming deer opener and decided I have the pistol and we will be ok. I started to walk the same way the tracks went up a hill on the trail when I stopped and looked back at her and she was still staring down at the prints. I said come on lets get this over with. She caught up to me as we walked together she said to me, “if this thing get’s a hold of me put a bullet in my head” I thought about that as we kept walking. We went deep into the woods down a steep hill where I new the feed pile was from last year. We got to where I wanted the pile to be and dumped the corn and apples out and stepped on the apples and said “let’s go” We started to climb the hill when I realized we where off track and had to walk left to reach the trail to get back to the truck. I started to think that this was the scariest thing I have ever encountered and felt panic over coming me. I new where I was and finally we got back on the trail and walked down to where we could see the tracks of the creature again. We both stared at them for 5 minutes. When we got back to the truck just 20 yards from the prints she got in and closed her door. I went behind the truck and re strapped the bucket down and closed the tail gate. I got to my side of the truck and took the clip out of my gun and got in as we drove away thinking and saying “I am not coming back here” and she agreed. We where both scared and could not believe what just happened. It was a month earlier and 1.1 miles walking through the woods from where we witnessed the tracks that a different friend and I where camping. I went to bed early and fell into a deep sleep. I woke up to the sound of my friend walking behind the tent and my first reply was “what are you doing back there?” I woke up a little more and realized my friend was sleeping breathing kind of loud next to me. I sat up against my gear and grabbed my pistol and flash light and sat there cold and scared in the dark. I woke my friend up and told him what I could hear and he said “ah it was probably a deer or something” The temperature was around 20 degrees. I looked out the flaps of the tent and could see the fire had died down and it was dark out there. I stood up and told my friend that I was going to the truck to warm up and get some sleep. I asked him if he wanted me to leave the pistol and he said “no I will be alright”. I left the tent and walked to my truck about 80 yards away and started it up to get warm. I turned my lights on a few different times to see if what had walked by the tent was in sight. I did not see anything, I turned my truck off and fell asleep. What ever walked by the tent was bi pedal and made 2 steps into my sound range and out again. I did not hear any other noise from what ever walked by. I looked around the next morning for foot prints but leaves covered the ground and I did not detect anything. A little more than 2 years earlier it was summer and I was at this same location riding my ATV alone, I stopped and got off walking down to a near by lake and was looking at the water and how clear it is when I could hear up on the hill above the camp ground we had stayed at a huge tree snap and hit the ground with a big thug as branches snapped off it and other trees as it fell, I got back to my ATV quickly at the time thinking a bear was up there and I was not sticking around to find out. 2 months later that summer I returned to this spot again riding my ATV, I shut off the wheeler and stood around close by thinking about the last time I was there I was scared off by something. I was there about 5 minutes when all of a sudden I could hear branches snapping off of trees as what ever was making the sound was coming down the hill closer to where I was. I got on my wheeler never to return until my friend and I camped there a little over 2 years later in October. My first 2 experiences with this creature while I was alone made me think it was possibly a bear or a buck deer, trouble with this theory is that I have come up on bear a dozen or so times and every time the bear is running as fast as it can in another direction and what ever was making the tree sounds was not running any where, A deer also runs away at the first presence of a human. Now that we witnessed these creatures foot prints I put the puzzle pieces together and realize that this creature is living in this area and it has probably been there for a long, long, long time. I have learned it means us no harm. It only makes a sound when I am alone (tree breaking). It is always down wind of me. It is out in the day and or night. It can see in the dark. It uses the wind to it’s advantage every chance it get’s. It can hear good. It can smell good. It waits until we are vulnerable to approach us when 2 of us are together. I possibly have smelled it and did not know that is what I was smelling. I (we) have put 4,000 miles in this forest on my Grizzly ATV through deep desolate wooded, swamp, lake areas and have now proved to ourselves that this undocumented at this time creature is in fact out there. I know where this creature is living and plan on an expedition to prove it’s existence. I want to document this creature because I feel everyone that enters the forest has a right to know it is there. I am open to any and all that would like to comment or ask questions in discussing my encounters with this creature(s).

  6. i totally believe in werewolves! has anyone here seen or thought that they say a werewolf or some kind before in there life? i want to go to bray road and see if i can spot the werewolf. the author linda godfrey is a really good writer and she wrote 2 books on werewolves. she said that they might be spritual or paranormal istead if flesh and blood animals. i really dont care if they are paranormal or not as long as they exist! i love werewolves! aroooh!

  7. “UPDATE” I have a picture that I took myself of the creature I wrote about in my true story above. It is the Wisconsin Dog Man that the Monster Quest Show- American Werewolf Episode previews. It is the first of the 3 creatures “Wolf Man” they mention in this episode. I have a hard time getting this creature off of my mind. My skin crawls every time I think about it. I am still planning on expedition’s to gather more evidence to bring this creature to every ones light. I feel very unique in that I am the one this creature has revealed itself to. This creature was watching me and my friend while we where camping in the true story I wrote about above. I have thought about feeding it but not sure if this is a good idea, mixing myself with it and food. It has gone this long providing for itself, why interfere with it in this manner to possibly do it any favors that could end up being a deadly mistake, if it is flesh and blood and could possibly turn hostile. I have done some interesting reading and research on this creature and will be sharing more later. I am thinking about writing a book about it for all to read that are interested. signed, Sure And Scared.

  8. For those whom are after this creature, I recommend to think about it twice. Maybe this creature does not come out that often to the public eye because it does not want to be found. (It feels wrong calling it an “it” but there is really no other way.) It probably knows that if it is found it is going to be submited through test and hurtful pain-like procedures. SO PPLEASE THINK ABOUT IT

  9. This creature I have a picture of will only appear to humans if it wants too. It has been around for a long time undocumented. It takes care of itself. I do not think it will ever be captured. Not to worry Lou-Lou

  10. To Robert and His Alleged Dog-Man Photos:

Your story is most likely false.

You emailed me repeatedly about photos, but never did send any.

I think your just making this story up and it is a hoax designed to get attention.

    Cheers!

    The Doctor

  11. Doctor,
I have the pictures I took that show foot print tracks and the Wisconsin Dog Man are not fake. I need attention for what, please explain? My girl and I know the creature I mention in my story above is real. I have no reason to lie, not even for attention. Once you apologize for assuming I am lying, I will send you the pictures I took that clearly show the creature is standing there watching me while I took the picture. I am waiting for an apology. I will send you the pictures once I have received the apology. Thank You. Sincerely, Robert.

  12. No matter what any one believes or dis believes referring to the Wisconsin Dog Man we know where lives does not affect me to the least, My girl and I know it is real, that is good enough for us. I have nothing to prove, it has already proven to us it’s existence and that is all that matters. I told my true encounters with the public so they can be aware of this creature. I believe because it is on Federal land where any American may travel, all have a right to know it is there. Keep your eyes open Scott & Doc. Sincerely with no reason for any more special attention from you or your people. Cheers! Robert
